This is a painting of an African American man coming out of the darkness into the light, overcoming struggle. The image is based on a photo of a man with AIDS and I was struck by his combination of strength and vulnerability. He looks straight at the viewer, defying us to ignore him. This painting was selected by juror Randall R. Griffey, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, for the 101st Annual Juried Exhibition of the Greenwich Art Society.
